The term sigil comes from the Latin Sigillum, meaning “seal” - it is also related to the Hebrew segula meaning “word, action, or item of spiritual effect, talisman.” It is used as a focus to summon what your sigil represents. The current use of the term was derived from Renaissance magic and inspired by the magical traditions of antiquity.
The use of symbols for divination has been used since at least the Neolithic era. Some examples from other cultures include the yantra from Hindu Tantra and historical runic magic among the Germanic peoples. The important idea is that the seed or essence of a force, concept, or pattern is equally in the sigil and the name (logos). Sigil and name are the two facets of the same thing.
Sigils may be traced in the air, carved on candles, drawn on paper and burned.
